Mindy Wiper is a native Texan who found her path to the Sierra Nevada mountains for 8 years teaching science outside for a non-profit, then called Yosemite Institute, now called NatureBridge. Mindy moved back to Texas in December 2014 to pursue her equestrian and art career. NatureBridge provides inquiry, theme, and adventure based education to connect people to the natural word and inspire responsible actions to sustain it. NatureBridge is one of the top environmental/experiential education organizations in the country. They have several campuses in our National Parks (Yosemite, Golden Gate, Olympic, Santa Monica Mountains, and Prince William Forest). While working for NatureBridge Yosemite, Mindy developed an art history program connecting students to their inner artists and to the artists who had gathered in Yosemite. Mindy focused the program on how art can help send both individual expression and conservation messages to the masses for inspiration and protection of our public and private lands. Mindy also developed her art program to operate in the field, outside, doing scientific drawing or plein air watercolor.
Mindy teaches how to use the scientific process in observational drawing, painting, and journaling in order to create artwork, spark personal reflection, and inspire a connection to nature. Her teaching style is very Socratic, student-based, hands-on, and experiential. Not only will students hopefully increase their drawing/painting abilities, but also her aim is to have them learn how to connect to nature for inspiration, and to teach personal development through journaling and drawing.
Mindy enjoys working with adults and children alike, and has a heavy focus on teambuilding (regardless of age!) as part of the group art process. Her rubber chicken, Bgawk, usually assists her in not taking herself or life too seriously. He also helps out with team building. Mindy is also a certified Life Coach, certified Yoga Teacher (RYT 200), Wilderness First Responder, former Black Belt in Taekwondo, and professional Equestrian.
